So are they punk rock? Or just petty punks?
Once again, the Sex Pistols are out to prove that they’re punker than you’ll ever be. This time, they’re snubbing their induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
In a crudely written letter on their site, the Pistols state, “Were [sic] not your monkey and So What?” In doing so, they seem to reinforce the idea that they are somehow punker than the Ramones or the Clash, both of whom accepted their rightful place in the Hall of Fame.
If one looks a little closer, it actually appears to be a matter of finances. Pistols bassist/family budget managerĀ Glen Matlock was balking at the ticket prices:
It’s nothing to do with the bands - it’s all to do with business. When I first heard about it I was quite excited… but then I found I was going to have to pay thousands of pounds to take my kids. It’s just a big corporate event, a bunch of Herberts in suits… just a money-making opportunity for multi-million shysters.
In the end, whether their rejection was based on principal, finances, or merely to plug the new concert film, Rotten and company have proven their ability to grab headlines once again. Years from now, you may have a hard time remembering who is or isn’t in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but you’re probably going to have it much easier remembering the band that turned down their nomination.

They’re still retarded, but you have to admit it’s more rock and roll than the hall of fame itself. Have you been there? first off, it’s in cleveland. Second, Johnny’s finally right about something, it is where old rockers go to die.
It’s a giant edifice of the establishment. Johnny Ramone probably made his pro-Bush comments at their induction because it’s the one place where the Ramones would be that he could feel comfortable enough expressing those sentiments.
As for Matlock’s quote about “a money-making opportunity” for “shysters,” I think your last Pistol-related post probably points out the irony of that one.
Incidentally, the beginning of the bio at the Pistols website was enough to make me yak. I remember an interview I have on a video where Captain Sensible talks about a bunch of people gathering in his house to listen to the album when it finally came out, and they all had the reaction of basically “What the hell is this slow-ass classic rock crap?”
